How to you become/get the certification to be a horse trainer?
I’m 14 right now, but I’m thinking about becoming a horse trainer. I know you have to be certified, but how do you do that? Also are there high school or college classes that I should take that will help? Thank you!
Depending on where you live there may be a tech program you can take in high school. If you are serious about it, take it. Some schools, particularly in very dense or suburban areas may not offer it. In high school take Psychology if it is available too as well as any classes that would help with public speaking and speaking to a group.
Then go and take lessons yourself. find which price ranges and what discipline you prefer. Most schools teach english, which i recommend you learn first if you prefer western then switch. If you prefer english and jumping be sure to choose between hunter and show jumping.
Next is to seek 2 different certifications that are absolutely necessary. The first is the CHA which is basically a certification stating that you are safe and knowledgeable of general horsemanship. The second and far more important is your ARIA certification. This certification will be in your chosen specialty. You must be 18 to get certification. There are 3 levels to ARIA certification and all but level 1 requires a certain number of years of teaching.
In college you can major in Equine Sciences. This has more to do with management of equines but it will help all the same.
