I was told by the vet all my horses need there teeth floated, my friend said he would only do those I ride?
His thinking is that as long as they are holding their weight are not in pain, seem to eat everthing completly why spend the money? He says they are not using a bit so they can go longer.
Any thoughts?
In the last couple of decades vets seem to be more and more concerned with floating teeth. I’ve had vets do that to me more than once. I just use this rule of thumb: If the horse isn’t dropping it’s grain, if the horse is full fleshed, if the horse is NOT having any issues chewing it’s hay/feed, then they normally don’t need their teeth floated. IF you can run your fingers down each side of a horse’s jaw from cheek to mouth and the horse doesn’t toss it’s head, then the horse is FINE. However if you find any of your horses, losing weight, having problems chewing, etc, then have them floated.
