horses in north america
Why do Aussies describe a race horse finishing poorly as “knocked up”?

In North America, we typically refer to the horse as having died in the stretch. “Knocked up” means pregnant.
Knocked Up – (Australian racing) A horse that has stopped running, given up in the home straight for example.

BTW, I know what it means–I would like to know its origins.

yeah I hear that one a lot. When you think that ‘knock’ means to strike a hard blow then it kinda makes sense to see a horse stop in the straight as though ‘knocked” or”as though hit with a hard blow’. These expressions, especially in horse racing with all of its slang, make perfect sense 150 yrs ago and the callers just keep using the expressions even without really knowing there precise meaning.
