Why does my horse pin her ears back when I feed her?
5 y/o TB Mare. Everytime I go to feed her she pins her ears back. If I talk to her and give her time to come to me she will let me rub her on the nose or shoulder before I get the grain and hay out, but once that’s out she is a totally different horse. I have only had her for a month and she doesn’t do this with my husband, but she does do it if anyone else trys to feed her. I think she is partially scared because of it being a new place, but I take my time when I go into the barn and I always let her come to me and move slow not to startle her.
Well my 4 yr old tried to get away with this about 6 months ago I’ve raised her from birth, it’s there way of “protecting” grain. But know what I’ve done it went out with a whip and gave the command back, placed feed in bucket and said “wait” counted at first two seconds and said okay, walk away this is reminding her she’s NOT the boss, which it sounds like she it, she’s not afraid of you. Know after a wk of that the next wk I counted to 4 seconds, and so on know I just go out and say wait, she turns her head but if she doesn’t wait gently tap her chest and say back but haven’t had to do that in a long time, she no longer pins her ears. I hope I explained this correct but she’s more respectful know and to all that feed her.
