changing diet question…horses?
when u change a horses diet too quickly the bacteria in the stomach cant digest it because its not used to the new diet? right?
but my main question is…i read that if u feed a horse too much grain the bacteria has to multiply to digest it(why does it have to multiply?).. and thus resulting in laminitis but could this cause colic too?(if so how)

It takes time for the intestinal environment to adapt to a change in the diet. It is more about disturbing the balance. The bacteria multiply faster, and go through their life cycle faster, and give off more endotoxins. The environment becomes more acid, and the toxins and acidity, when excessive, can become systemic by entering the bloodstream, and affecting the whole body. The presence of these toxins and the acids somehow (still being studied) lead to enzyme changes in the hooves, which bring on laminitis.
When too much grain is fed, the enzymes that normally break it down for absorption in the small intestine can’t completely break down the starches, so large amount of incompletely digested starch reaches the cecum, where fermentation takes place. The bacteria in the cecum are not ideally suited to handling these starches, and must multiply rapidly. Normally they can slowly do their job as fermentation of fiber takes place….these starches are not fibers, and don’t take as long to be broken down and prepared for absorption from the intestine into the blood. Again, end products, or endotoxins, build up and if enough are present, may enter the bloodstream. The rapid multiplication of bacteria also results in an acid environment which also contributes to the development of laminitis. Colic can occur because of the gases produced and the pH disturbance in the gut.
