A question about horses…?
My family and I bought a gelding during the beginning of the year. He is about 5 years old.
He often gets lonely, and our goats don’t do a very good job of keeping him company, because he does not like them, and they don’t like him.
We live next to a place with alot of horses, and our fences are attacked, and often he ges over to them, and tries to spend time with them, but most of them just carry on into the large pasture. Once I was out, and saw him with another horse, and I was like, “Well, great, he’s made a ‘friend’.’ But it just turned out to be a mare in heat. She left him alone after a while too.
We recently bought a older mare, CJ. CJ is missing an eye, but she can still be ridden and can go over jumps.
Since she is a mare, and still goes into heat, my question is:
Will they try to breed? I know geldings cannot breed, but do you think he will still try?
They may try to breed but most likely he will just get excited and show some courtship behaviors such as prancing when he’s around her, circling her, and putting his lip up like he’s smiling (he’s smelling her). It’s best to keep them seperated because geldings can get aggressive and mares can get mean when a mare is in heat.
Hope this helps=)
