I love that song. The imagery is fascinating and disturbing. Johnny Cash said he wrote it after a dream he had in which Queen Elizabeth told him he was “like a whirlwind in a thorn tree.” The phrase sounded familiar and he found it was in a Bible passage then wrote the song around it.
I’m not a Christian, so I don’t attach any personal spiritual significance to the song. But I do find the dark, sinister aspect of it to be very interesting – it sort of strips away the smiley face that modern Christianity likes to paint on the terrifying prophecies of the Bible.
